Humana's climate targets – towards net-zero by 2050

Humana's most important environmental issue is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to counteracting climate change. Therefore, we have set science-based climate targets to reduce our impact in line with the Paris Agreement's 1.5-degree goal. By 2025, our climate targets have been reviewed and approved by the independent, international body Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) – an important milestone in our sustainability work.

Humana's climate impact

Humana has an impact on the climate primarily based on our large number of housing operations, which give rise to the purchase of, for example, food and consumables, and which require property development, operation and maintenance. Our geographically dispersed workplaces also mean a significant amount of travel and transport, which is also emission-driven.

Humana's scientific climate targets

Our climate targets are about reducing greenhouse gas emissions throughout our value chain. The approval from SBTi includes both short-term goals by 2030 and a long-term goal of net-zero emissions by 2050. Our base year for all goals is 2024.

Short term targets for 2030:

  • Scope 1 & 2: We will reduce direct emissions from our own operations and from the production of our purchased energy by 42%.
  • Scope 3: We will reduce our indirect emissions in the value chain by reducing emissions from employee commuting and business travel, as well as from fuel and energy-related activities by 30.8%. We will also work to ensure that 67% of our suppliers, in terms of emissions, set their own science-based climate targets.

Long term target: Net-zero by 2050

  • We are committed to reaching net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across the value chain by 2050. This commitment means that we will prioritise direct emission reductions at all stages and only neutralise the last, unavoidable emissions in accordance with the SBTi's strict criteria.

Humana's way forward – how we achieve the targets

To achieve our goals, we will continue our climate work. The Roadmap initially focuses on the following areas:

Transition to renewable energy across the Group: Ensure that electricity and heat for our properties and operations are renewable in all units.

A more sustainable vehicle fleet: Reduce emissions from our own and leased vehicles by gradually switching to fossil-free alternatives and using the vehicles more efficiently.

Sustainable sourcing and supplier collaborations: Set clearer climate requirements in our procurements and collaborate with our suppliers to jointly reduce emissions throughout the value chain.

Reduced climate impact from travel: Encourage and create conditions for employees' sustainable travel both to and from work and as part of the service.

Since 2022, Humana has had a policy of purchasing certificates of origin to secure renewable electricity throughout the Group. We now continue to apply that commitment to all newly acquired entities. In Finland, where there are still some heating systems left with heating oil, there is a continuous switch to more environmentally friendly alternatives. A move towards a fossil-free car fleet has also begun and will continue over time.

For many years, Humana has been requiring that all new construction must have a property energy consumption that is at least 20 percent lower than the legal requirement, that solar cells are installed where possible, and that all lighting must have low-energy technology.

We encourage employees to travel climate-smart, as well as to use the company's cars efficiently. As part of reducing travel, Humana wants to facilitate remote work as much as possible. In addition, all of Humana's operations must also work to reduce food waste and waste.

Measuring greenhouse gas emissions

Since 2020, Humana has measured and reported greenhouse gas emissions based on the Greenhouse Gas Protocol's three so-called scopes, where scope 1 includes direct emissions, scope 2 applies to emissions from purchased electricity, heating and cooling, and scope 3 covers other indirect emissions from the value chain.

In simple terms, the distribution of emissions based on the three scopes looks like this at Humana (2024):

Emission area

CO2e (tonnes)

Share

Scope 1: Cars in business, fuel oil

3 700

7 %

Scope 2: Electricity, district heating

4 300

8 %

Scope 3: Purchased goods and services, commuting, business travel, etc. (indirect emissions from the value chain)

43 000

84 %
